New research published in JAMA Pediatrics by Dr. Brandy Wicklow, Dr. Sellers and Dr. Atul Sharma examines the association of Gestational Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes Exposure In Utero With the Development of Type 2 Diabetes in First Nations and Non–First Nations Offspring.
The result? First Nations status and type 2 diabetes exposure were associated with the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in offspring. Rates of type 2 diabetes were significantly different for gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes exposures.
Because the risks are different for offspring, authors suggest the benefits of earlier screening in pregnancy and differential follow-up of the offspring. This article can be accessed here.

New research published in JAMA Pediatrics from Dr. Meghan Azad found a 63 per cent increased risk of becoming overweight among infants who were partially (versus exclusively) breastfed at three months of age, and a 102 per cent increased risk among exclusively formula-fed infants.The full article can be accessed here.

Congratulations Dr. Jon McGavock, Dr. Brandy Wicklow, Dr. Sellers, Dr. Allison Dart and other authors on their recent publication "Determinants of Readiness for Adopting Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Among Indigenous Adolescents with Type 2 Diabetes in Manitoba, Canada: A Cross‐Sectional Study". The take home message? only 14% participants were considered ready to adopt all healthy lifestyle behaviors. The readiness to adopt all lifestyle behaviors was associated with higher positive mental health, and sense of mastery, lower perceived stress, and better glycemic control compared with youth who were not ready to adopt all lifestyle behaviours. Congratulations Dr. Meghan Azad, Geert T'Jong and other authors for their new publication "Prenatal Antibiotic Exposure and Childhood Asthma: a Population-Based Study" in the European Respiratory Society Journal. The biggest take home message is that maternal antibiotic use is associated with childhood asthma, however this association is not specific to antibiotic use during pregnancy. Birth Issues in Perinatal Care
Congratulations to Dr. Meghan Azad, Dr. Jon Mcgavock, Dr. Alan Becker and all other authors on their recent publication "Exclusive breastfeeding in hospital predicts longer breastfeeding duration in Canada: Implications for health equity" in Birth Issues in Perinatal Care. This work highlights how exclusive breastfeeding in hospital is associated with longer breastfeeding duration, particularly among women of lower socioeconomic status. Congratulations to Dr. Hesam Movassagh, Dr. Andrew Halayko and affiliated authors for their recent publication "Semaphorin 3E Alleviates Hallmarks of House Dust Mite-Induced Allergic Airway Disease" in the American Journal of Pathology. This work relates to the ongoing development of murine models of asthma that investigate interventions and help to decipher the patho-biological origins and exacerbations of allergic airway disease.

Congratulations to Prasoon Agarwal, DREAM Diabetes Theme post-doctoral fellow, the lead author of a review written together with his colleagues in the DREAM theme (Taylor Morriseau, Stephanie Kereliuk, Dr. Brandy Wicklow, Dr. Christine Doucette Doucette) that was recently published in the journal Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. This paper is a comprehensive review of 200 recent original research articles covering recent experimental findings that test the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory with evidence from both human cohort studies and animal model systems. Specifically this review critically evaluates how maternal obesity and diabetes during pregnancy influence the developmental origins of cardiometabolic disease in the offspring and how epigenetic mechanisms are implicated. The authors address limitations and areas requiring further study so that knowledge can lead to advancements in screening, prevention and therapeutic approaches for children at risk of cardiometabolic disease development.The full article can be accessed here.

Complexities of human milk
Congratulations to Dr. Meghan Azad’s recent publications in the International Journal of Obesity regarding a new study. Led by Dr. Meghan Azad, the paper examines the potential effect of three breastmilk hormones (adiponectin, leptin and insulin) on infant body composition and explores the association of maternal characteristics with variations in these hormones. The data was collected from the CHILD Study, which was launched in 2008 by CIHR and AllerGen NCE.

Drs. Christine Doucette and Vern Dolinsky are members of the DEVOTION network that contributed to this publication along with six other authors.
Congratulations to Dr. Meghan Azad of her recent publication in European Respiratory Journal entitled “Breastfeeding, maternal asthma and wheezing in the first year of life: a longitudinal birth cohort study”. The research shows that breastfed babies have a reduced rate of wheezing, putting them at a lower risk for asthma later on.
